We decided to apply organic compost to our fields this fall instead of using chemical fertilizers.
Compost is absolutely teeming with beneficial microbes that help feed our fields. These microbes digest the organic matter in the compost and release the nutrients in it into the soil. Compost improves soil properties, provides nutrients in a stable organic form, increases plant growth and health, adds organic matter and conserves water.
We need 4,000,000 pounds of compost to apply the correct nutrients to our fields! That’s a lot of compost! They are currently delivering and staging the compost in strategic locations on the farm. It will be applied after it is all delivered. The fields will have all winter and early spring to enjoy this meal and the winter moisture will help them take it up.
